***Over the years I have grown substantially more invested in dog nutrition education.  In 2024 I decided to pursue professional training and studied to become a canine focused nutritionist.  I have been able to apply 15 years of hands-on experience to formalized nutrition education.  Many of the things I have learned reinforced prior experiences, so information has been brand new. It has been gratifying combining both formal education with hands-on experience.    

After 15 years of breeding bulldogs, I’ve watched countless owners struggle with itchy, inflamed skin and dull coats. They try expensive prescription foods, medicated shampoos, and steroid treatments. Yet often, the solution is remarkably simple: proper omega-3 supplementation. But here’s the critical part most people miss—it needs to be added fresh as a food topper, not relied upon from processed dog food.


The Omega Imbalance Crisis in Dog Food

Let’s start with a startling fact: most commercial dog foods contain omega-6 to omega-3 ratios approaching 30:1. Research shows that ratios above 6:1 actively promote inflammation (Bauer, 2011). To put this in perspective, feeding your dog pure chicken skin would actually provide a better omega balance than many premium kibbles.

Why does this matter? Omega-6 fatty acids, while essential, promote inflammatory responses when consumed in excess. They’re cheap and shelf-stable, which is why dog food manufacturers load their products with corn oil, soy oil, and other omega-6-rich ingredients. Why Omega-3 in Dog Food Doesn’t Work

Here’s what the dog food companies don’t want you to know: even if they add omega-3 to their formulas, the high-heat processing destroys most of its benefits. Omega-3 fatty acids are incredibly fragile. When exposed to the temperatures required for kibble production (often exceeding 200°F), they oxidize and lose their therapeutic properties.

A 2018 study examining omega-3 stability in pet food found that processing reduces bioavailable EPA and DHA by up to 70% (Tou et al., 2018). Worse yet, oxidized omega-3s can actually become pro-inflammatory, potentially doing more harm than good. That expensive “omega-3 enriched” food you’re buying? It’s likely delivering a fraction of the benefits promised on the bag.

  2. Fresh raw fish: Sardines, mackerel, and salmon (properly frozen to eliminate parasites)
  3. Algae oil: A sustainable alternative that provides direct EPA and DHA

Skip the plant-based options—they simply don’t deliver therapeutic levels of the omega-3s your dog needs.


The Bulldog Connection: Why Breed Matters

Bulldogs face unique challenges that make omega-3 supplementation even more critical. Research shows brachycephalic breeds have a 49-fold higher risk of skin fold dermatitis compared to other dogs (O’Neill et al., 2022). Their skin folds create warm, moist environments perfect for inflammation and infection.

Additionally, bulldogs often have compromised skin barrier function. Studies indicate they have reduced lipid content in their stratum corneum—the skin’s protective outer layer. This makes them more susceptible to allergens, irritants, and moisture loss.

Omega-3 supplementation helps by:

  • Strengthening the skin barrier
  • Reducing inflammatory responses in skin folds
  • Supporting healthy coat growth
  • Decreasing the frequency and severity of hot spots

Simple Implementation: Making It Work

Here’s the straightforward approach I recommend to all my puppy buyers:

Daily Supplementation: Add liquid fish oil to your dog’s food at each meal. The key is consistency—therapeutic effects typically appear after 6-8 weeks of daily supplementation.

Quality Matters: Use human-grade fish oil or fish oil specifically formulated for pets. Avoid products that have been sitting on shelves for months—freshness is crucial.

Storage: Keep fish oil refrigerated and use within 90 days of opening. If it smells “fishy” or rancid, throw it out.

Alternative Option: Two to three times per week, replace fish oil with a small portion of canned sardines in water (not oil). Most dogs love them, and they provide complete nutrition along with omega-3s.


The Hidden Cost of Ignoring Omega-3

Many bulldog owners don’t realize they’re already paying for their dog’s omega-3 deficiency—through vet bills. Chronic skin conditions, recurring ear infections, and inflammatory issues that could be prevented with proper supplementation often cost hundreds or thousands in veterinary care.

I’ve seen it repeatedly: owners spend fortunes on prescription diets and medications when a simple daily dose of fish oil could have prevented the problem. It’s not that veterinary care isn’t important—it absolutely is. But why not address the root cause nutritionally?


Bottom Line for Bulldog Owners

After 15 years in this breed, I can say with confidence that omega-3 supplementation as a food topper should be standard practice for every bulldog owner. The science is clear, the implementation is simple, and the benefits are profound.

Your dog’s itchy skin, dull coat, or inflammatory issues might not need another expensive prescription. They might just need you to balance out all those inflammatory omega-6s in their food with fresh, bioavailable omega-3s.
