Genotype and Phenotype Based Breeding

Phenotype selection represents decision making based on the physical traits of each parent.  Health screening, physical and behavioral observation are all included in making decisions based on phenotype.

Having very specific health and behavioral standards are essential to developing screening protocol.  You can check out our criteria here.

Genotype selection is based on discovering a bulldog’s genetic makeup – both recessive and dominant genes.  This can be done through genetic testing as well as historical offspring records through an understanding of basic punnett square biology.  Much can be learned from offspring data collection.  If a stud consistently produces puppies with elbow dysplasia but does not physically possess the condition, most likely it carries the recessive trait.  Consistent data collection through generations of offspring can create an accurate understanding of bulldog genetics.

At Bruiser Bulldogs we strive to make our decisions through information

Through both phenotype and genotype discovery.  We have bred English Bulldogs since 2010 and seen consistent improvement in the health of our bloodlines by gradually evolving our bulldogs away from the problems we see in the breed today.  Utilization of information is the only way these improvements are possible.
