Things to do with your English Bulldog in Texas

Visit a Dog-Friendly Park: Texas has numerous dog parks where you can take your English Bulldog to socialize and exercise. Make sure the park allows dogs of all sizes and has amenities like water stations and waste disposal.

Take a Hike: Many state parks in Texas welcome leashed dogs on their trails. Look for trails with moderate difficulty levels and scenic views where your Bulldog can enjoy a good walk.

Attend Bulldog Meetups: Join local Bulldog owner groups or online communities to find Bulldog meetups and events in your area. It’s a great way for your Bulldog to socialize with other dogs of the same breed.

Go for a Swim: If your Bulldog enjoys the water, look for dog-friendly beaches, lakes, or swimming holes where they can splash around and cool off during hot Texas summers.

Outdoor Dining: Many restaurants with outdoor seating areas in Texas are dog-friendly. Bring your Bulldog along while you enjoy a meal or a drink on a patio.

Take a Road Trip: Texas has many pet-friendly destinations worth exploring. Plan a road trip to places like San Antonio, Austin, or Galveston, where you can find attractions, accommodations, and restaurants that welcome dogs.

Visit a Dog-Friendly Brewery or Winery: Several breweries and wineries in Texas allow dogs on their premises. Enjoy some local brews or wines while your Bulldog lounges nearby.

Play Fetch or Frisbee: Bulldogs might not be the most athletic dogs, but they can still enjoy a game of fetch or catch with a frisbee in a fenced-in yard or a dog park.

Try Agility Training: Bulldogs might not excel in agility like some other breeds, but they can still have fun navigating simple obstacle courses. Look for local dog training facilities that offer agility classes or set up your own course in your backyard.

Relax at Home: Sometimes, the best thing to do with your Bulldog is to simply relax at home together. Bulldogs enjoy lounging around and being close to their owners, so spend some quality time cuddling, playing indoor games, or watching a movie together.

Remember to consider the weather conditions, especially during the hot Texas summers, and always ensure your Bulldog stays hydrated and comfortable during outdoor activities.

FAQ’s About Owning an English Bulldog in Texas

1. What are some important considerations before getting an English Bulldog in Texas?

Before getting an English Bulldog in Texas, consider the breed’s specific needs, such as their exercise requirements, potential health issues, and grooming needs. Additionally, ensure that you have enough space for them to move around comfortably, as Bulldogs can be prone to obesity.

2. How do I find a reputable English Bulldog breeder in Texas?

To find a reputable breeder, research thoroughly and ask for recommendations from local veterinarians or Bulldog owners. Look for breeders who prioritize the health and well-being of their dogs, conduct health screenings, and provide proper care for their puppies. Avoid purchasing from puppy mills or backyard breeders.

3. What are the common health concerns for English Bulldogs in Texas?

English Bulldogs are prone to various health issues, including respiratory problems, skin infections, hip dysplasia, and cherry eye. In Texas, where heat can be a concern, it’s essential to prevent overheating in Bulldogs due to their brachycephalic (short-nosed) nature. Regular veterinary check-ups and a proper diet can help mitigate these risks.

4. How should I care for my English Bulldog’s coat in the Texas climate?

Due to the hot climate in Texas, English Bulldogs may require extra attention to their coat care. Regular grooming, including brushing to remove loose hair and debris, can help keep their coat healthy. Be cautious of sunburn, especially on their exposed skin, and consider using pet-safe sunscreen or protective clothing when outdoors.

5. How much exercise does an English Bulldog need in Texas?

While English Bulldogs don’t require extensive exercise, they do need regular walks and playtime to maintain a healthy weight and prevent boredom. In Texas, where temperatures can soar, it’s essential to exercise them during cooler times of the day to avoid overheating. Short walks and indoor play sessions are ideal during hot weather.

6. How can I keep my English Bulldog cool during the hot Texas summers?

To keep your English Bulldog cool during the hot Texas summers, provide ample shade and access to fresh water at all times, especially when outdoors. Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day, and consider using cooling mats or vests to help regulate their body temperature.

7. Are English Bulldogs good with children and other pets in Texas households?

English Bulldogs are known for their gentle and affectionate nature, making them excellent companions for children. However, as with any breed, early socialization and proper training are essential. Supervise interactions between Bulldogs and young children to prevent accidental injuries due to the breed’s sturdy build. With proper introductions, Bulldogs can also get along well with other pets in the household.

8. How do I protect my English Bulldog from common pests in Texas, such as fleas and ticks?

To protect your English Bulldog from common pests like fleas and ticks in Texas, use vet-approved preventive measures such as topical treatments, oral medications, or collars. Regularly check your Bulldog for signs of infestation, especially after spending time outdoors, and keep your home environment clean to prevent reinfestation.

9. What are some tips for training an English Bulldog in Texas?

Consistent and positive reinforcement-based training methods work best for English Bulldogs. Start training early and focus on basic commands like sit, stay, and come. Bulldogs respond well to food motivation, so use treats as rewards for good behavior. Additionally, be patient and consistent with training sessions, as Bulldogs can have a stubborn streak.

10. What resources are available for English Bulldog owners in Texas?

In Texas, English Bulldog owners can access various resources such as local breed clubs, online forums, and social media groups dedicated to Bulldog enthusiasts. These platforms provide opportunities to connect with other owners, share experiences, and seek advice on caring for and training Bulldogs in the Texas environment. Additionally, consider enrolling in obedience classes or hiring a professional trainer if needed.

  • I've grown up with english bulldogs my whole life. I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup!

  • We, like many of the other people who found Bruisers, did a lot of research to find a responsible breeder, especially since English Bulldogs can have health issues and because there is a trend now for "trendy" bulldogs (blue, etc.) which have even more health issues. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine (Callie) for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders.

  • Bruiser Bulldogs is a 5-star breeder in every way. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny (formerly Blair) for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog #2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs.

  • We waited a while to write this review so that we had a better sense for the overall health of our Bruiser Bulldog “Bowser”. Bowser was born April 2020 and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. As for Bowsers health, he’s a health energetic English Bulldog that has no problem keeping up with the kids, going on 2 mi walks and camping with us on a regular basis. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile.

  • After the loss of our first English Bulldog due to health issues it was very important for us to find a breeder who did not breed only for aesthetic but more importantly for health. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us.In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are very social and very friendly to everyone they meet including kids and other dogs/animals. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! My sister and her fiancé also fell in love with them and now are on the waitlist themselves for a Bruiser bulldog!Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough!

  • We fell in love with our puppy the moment we saw him. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone.

Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs!
