As a responsible bulldog owner, ensuring the comfort and safety of your furry friend is paramount. One of the essential aspects of caring for your bulldog is providing them with a suitable crate – a secure and cozy space they can call their own. However, determining the correct crate size for your bulldog can be a daunting task, especially considering their growth from puppy to adult. In this guide, we’ll explore the factors to consider and provide practical tips to help you select the perfect crate size for your beloved bulldog.

One of the first steps in preparing for the arrival of your new bulldog puppy is purchasing a puppy crate.

Here at Bruiser Bulldogs, we are big advocates for crate training (we will go into one important benefit of crate training later in this article), and selecting a proper crate is naturally a very important first step.

Understanding Your Bulldog’s Size and Growth Before diving into crate selection, it’s crucial to understand the typical size and growth trajectory of bulldogs. Bulldogs are a medium-sized breed, known for their sturdy build and muscular frame. While adult bulldogs generally weigh between 40 to 60 pounds. Additionally, bulldogs may continue to fill out and gain weight until they reach maturity at around 18 to 24 months of age.

Choosing the correct crate, the first time, can not only save you money and hassle; it can also jumpstart your potty training program.  The size of the crate is important.  We recommend that you buy a crate that will fit your puppy into adulthood.  Rather than buying a new crate each time your puppy grows out of one, we encourage you to find a crate that comes with a divider.  The divider will adjust to fit your 10-week old bully all the way up to your full-grown, adult Bulldog.  A large crate can save you both money and time shopping for multiple crates!

Now you may be thinking that a large crate would be a wonderful idea because your puppy will have lots of room to sleep and play when you cannot be home.  This thought process is not completely true and here is why.  Your puppy will more likely struggle with the potty training process in a larger crate.  Larger crates actually elongate the potty training process, causing a stressor in both you and your bulldog’s life.

The flaw to a crate that is too large for your puppy is as follows, they will do their business (potty & poo) in the back corner and then take a nap in the clean front corner all the while learning that they can use their crate as a bathroom and sleeping quarter at the same time.  A bulldog that becomes comfortable with urinating and defecating in their crate instantly becomes much harder to potty train.  The divided crate begins to orient your bulldog puppy to the consequences of a potty accident.  Suddenly, peeing anywhere and everywhere is not quite as fun as it used to be.  This process will create a trigger in your puppy’s brain to hold it until they are let outside which will result in a speedy potty training process!

If you are wanting a small crate to start with verses a large crate with a divider follow the size guidelines below

Recommended Crate Sizes for Bulldogs Based on the average size and growth trajectory of bulldogs, the following crate sizes are recommended for various life stages:

  1. Puppy Stage (10 weeks): For bulldog puppies between 10 weeks of age, a crate size of approximately 24-30 inches in length is ideal. This size allows ample room for growth while providing a snug and secure environment that mimics the den-like feeling puppies naturally seek.
  2. Adolescent Stage (6 months): As your bulldog puppy continues to grow and mature, consider upgrading to a larger crate size of 30-36 inches in length. This size provides increased space for movement and comfort during the adolescent stage when puppies experience rapid growth.
  3. Adult Stage (1 year and older): Once your bulldog reaches adulthood, a crate size of 36-42 inches in length is recommended. This size accommodates the full-grown stature of most bulldogs while providing ample room for them to stretch out and relax.

Crate Cover

We love crate covers, they are the perfect accessory for the crate and they really do work! A crate cover is a great tool for creating a cozy and separate space for your new puppy.  Bedtime, especially the first few nights can be hard but with the help of a cover the crate becomes more like a little cozy den.  The cover also helps to block the view of family members walking around which can cause your puppy to want to join in and start wining.

We started using the Yotache crate cover it is a wonderful compliment to the Midwest Lifestages crate.  We love this crate cover because of its tight fit and high quality polyester material.  The two door cover option allows for easy access to both doors of our Midwest Lifestages crate.

Conclusion Selecting the right crate size for your bulldog is a crucial step in ensuring their comfort, safety, and overall well-being. By considering factors such as your bulldog’s size, age, behavior, and growth trajectory, you can choose a crate that meets their needs at every stage of life. Remember to provide plenty of positive reinforcement and gradually introduce your bulldog to their crate to create a positive association. With the right crate size and proper training, your bulldog will have a secure and cozy space they can call their own for years to come.

  • I've grown up with english bulldogs my whole life. I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup!

  • We, like many of the other people who found Bruisers, did a lot of research to find a responsible breeder, especially since English Bulldogs can have health issues and because there is a trend now for "trendy" bulldogs (blue, etc.) which have even more health issues. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine (Callie) for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders.

  • Bruiser Bulldogs is a 5-star breeder in every way. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny (formerly Blair) for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog #2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs.

  • We waited a while to write this review so that we had a better sense for the overall health of our Bruiser Bulldog “Bowser”. Bowser was born April 2020 and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. As for Bowsers health, he’s a health energetic English Bulldog that has no problem keeping up with the kids, going on 2 mi walks and camping with us on a regular basis. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile.

  • After the loss of our first English Bulldog due to health issues it was very important for us to find a breeder who did not breed only for aesthetic but more importantly for health. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us.In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are very social and very friendly to everyone they meet including kids and other dogs/animals. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! My sister and her fiancé also fell in love with them and now are on the waitlist themselves for a Bruiser bulldog!Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough!

  • We fell in love with our puppy the moment we saw him. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone.
